“Before I did reality shows I was a developer. Still am. Real estate. I build homes. I own buildings. I owned a cigar company. I studied law at Chicago’s Loyola University. I’m a motivational speaker. But I’m now also a salesman for Rogaine, the product that restores hair growth. I’d been a customer. In my 40s. I needed it and it helped. I believe in the product. I’ll do print ads and TV plugs.
“I also own restaurants like an Italian one in Chicago called RPM. Every day I think it can be the last, so I prepare for the ending. There’s lots of difficulty running a restaurant. I know nothing about the business, but my partners are the best at it.”
No breath in between. “My wife, Giuliana, and I wrote a best-selling book on what makes a relationship last. We have a healthy relationship. We live half in Chicago, half in LA, but she tells me she’s having a baby in August, so we’re looking for a bigger place.
“On ‘Giuliana and Bill’ we do good, not evil. We’ve tackled infertility, breast cancer. People watch us with others around them.
“The new show’s ‘Ready for Love.’ It’s an hour, maybe longer. Eva Longoria is executive producer. She partnered with the producing company Renegade, which does reality programs. Eva’s not on the program — at least not yet — but she came up with the idea then met with NBC. It’s matchmaking. Finding real love. Three match makers with three bachelorettes who know the history of men they’re meeting. It’ll air in December.
“At first I hated the reality show idea. I wasn’t interested. I did ‘The Apprentice’ just to test my business skills. Who knew boardroom scenes where you have to fight for your life could last for hours?”
And the derivation of his last name? “Croatian. My family’s from the coastal region. The original spelling was Rancich.”
I hung up. But he might still be speaking.
